On 29-30 May 2023, His Excellency Sreang Chenda, Member and Director of the Department of International and United Nations Human Rights, and His Excellency Chin Angkarith, Member and Director of the Department of Regional and ASEAN Human Rights, were assigned to participate in “AICHR Regional Consultation on Business and Human Rights, Environment and Climate Change in ASEAN” hosted by AICHR-Malaysia with the support of the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI), and in partnership with the Asia Pacific Forum, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

This Consultation aims (1) to raise awareness of environmental rights and climate change among ASEAN Member States (AMS), (2) establish support networks and share networks between state businesses and other stakeholders in tackling climate change, (3) clarify the comprehensive content of the EU’s proposed Directive on Human Rights and the Environment, with due diligence and how to create best practices in ASEAN, and (4) provide consulting space for regional frameworks on ASEAN environmental rights in ASEAN among AICHR, ASBs, NHRIs as well as other stakeholders.

The Consultation brought together representatives of AICHR, ASEAN sectoral bodies, including the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), ASEAN Political Security Community (APSC), ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC), together with the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), Asia Pacific Forum (APF), National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), UN experts, academia and some specialised institutions involved.
