Cambodian Human Rights Committee spokesman, Chin Malin, said the government is set to launch a new national independent human rights centre following recommendations from the UN.

The announcement was made in a press conference after a meeting between the Australian Ambassador to Cambodia Pablo Kang and Head of Cambodian Human Rights Committee Keo Remy yesterday.

He said Australia will assist Cambodia in creating a new national human rights center, based on the Paris principles, given Australia’s experience following the formation of its own long-standing human rights commission.

Mr Malin said: “A national human rights centre is a requirement of UN member states. We need an independent centre to represent the country. We accept the recommendations from the UN and are preparing to establish a new centre as soon as possible.

According to Mr Remy, the draft law of the new national independent human rights centre is already being refined and will be finished pending input from both relevant government institutions and civil societies.

The decision regarding the closing down of the current center will be discussed later, Mr Malin said.
