UN representative visits Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
UN assistant secretary-general (ASG) for Middle East, Asia and Pacific in the Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA) Khaled Khiari visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum yesterday to understand about its history and what happened at the former Security Office 21, or S-21, during the Khmer Rouge era.
While visiting Cambodia, he will have discussions with the UN country team, development partners, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), the business community, think tanks and youth groups.
Cambodian Human Rights Committee president Keo Remy told Khiari about the important work of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) as the tribunal which tried senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime.
The ECCC also allowed victims to participate in the trial on behalf of the civil parties and this court’s model is internationally recognised for maintaining Cambodia’s full sovereignty and national unity, he said.
In response, Khiari thanked all stakeholders for a well-organised visit and praised the work done by the Khmer Rouge tribunal to find justice.
